20 seconds to open any Word file

I have been running Word 2002 with SP2 for a long time on
my XP machine without problem. Today, with no
installation of new apps or changes in configurations,
Word now takes about 20 seconds to open any Word file,
during which time the message in the lower left corner
says "requesting virus scan". I've had Norton for over a
year, and this has never been a problem prior to today.
If anyone has insight on how to correct this, I would be
very appreciative. Thanks much!

Sounds like a valid question. I just started using Word 2003 from today. It says "Running Virus Scan" before opening a .doc file. Also I have observed that the Word software itself takes bit longer to load first time compared to its siblings i.e. Excel and PowerPoint 2003. Is there any fix or option setting to speed up the Word loading?

Turn off the Norton AV Office Plug-In from Norton's misc options. This will
turn off the document scanning, without compromising your system security.

Graham,

You are a great guy. I turned off that option in Norton's Anti Virus. Now Word doc opens without delay. Also it answers my another concern that I mentioned in my other posting. Word 2003 software loads without any delay the first time. Graham thanks for your help!

There are reports in newsgroups circulating that a recent update (this
week) by Norton of Anti-virus is causing this problem. Trying to track
this down ...

Frankly I have become heartily sick of Norton AV. It slows down the system
to a crawl. I am currently running without a virus checker, but there again,
I am scrupulous about what is loaded or downloaded on my machine.

I have the same problem, did you get any responses? Can
you forward those to me please.

Thanks

I hope you find something out soon. One of the websites I run for a
customer has many Word Documents linked for users to browse and/or download.
They are getting calls and emails from disgruntled users whose WinWord is
stalling or crashing all of a sudden (this site and process has worked
flawlessly for the last 5 years) and the only common denominator seems to be
Norton AV.

Really don't want to have to tell users that they will have to disable their
AV anything as that would surely cause mass hysteria LOL.

Please let us know what you hear from the Norton folks when you can.

You don't need to disable Norton AV - only its office plug-in which does
nothing useful.

I understand that. However, explaining to non-internet savvy folks how to
open their AV, where to click to get to Miscellaneous, and then telling them
to uncheck a box will be a pain in the butt for sure. Hopefully they will
update again soon with a fix for this.

Thanks.

Still rumour re Norton problem ... I have yet not spotted something I
would call confirmation, but there is "talk" something is going on.

It'll be a bigger pain if they constantly hassle you over the delays. Given
the scale of this problem I am sure that Symantec will have it in hand. A
rude note to them wouldn't go amiss. I have taken Norton AV off my machine
and it runs like a Pentium 4 again, rather than a 486 :)

Greetings, I'm having the problem without NAV. It may be a NAV problem
in some cases but not in all. I have done a clean install of w2k and
Word 2003 and I get a delay message that says "running virus scan..."
when I have Endnotes installed which has a number of .wll files in
Word's startup folder. Move these out and there's no delay. So, Word
2003 seems to have an internal virus scanner that is causing my delay.
It would be cool if you could shut this off somehow or do a reg hack
to disable this. I do my own virus scans. I don't need Word to do them
at every boot, the same files!!

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:

There is no virus scanner in Word! If you have done a clean install that has
never included an anti-virus application, it seems pretty obvious that
Endnotes is asking for a virus check that it cannot provide. I am not
familiar with Endnotes - I suggest you check out its configuration.

That would be very puzzling. Word is giving the message "running virus
scan". The message occurred after a clean install of w2k and Word
2003. No virus scanner installed. Endnotes has no virus scanner on
board. I don't believe that Word 2003 isn't running a check on the
files in its startup folder. We know that it checks for macro
viruses?!! No? I'm happy to send you one of these .wll files and you
can test it for yourself. Just put it in your startup folder. You'll
see a delay as word indicates "running virus scan". Uninstall your
virus scanner and run it. I'm not making this up. Word 2003 seems to
be running a check on that file. No other program is doing it.
Endnotes simply integrates with Word via a .dot file and a .wll file
in startup. It has no virus scanner on board. So, I'm puzzled. Where
are you getting the info that Word 2003 is not running this scan, and
if it isn't why can't I turn it off? I can get the scan with a clean
install of nothing but w2k, Word 2003 and a copy of this .wll or any
..wll file in the startup folder. If Word 2003 isn't running the scan,
perhaps aliens are!! :)
Steven

Whether or not you choose to believe it, Word does not have a virus scanner
built in. Neither does it check for macro viruses. It merely allows several
options for controlling what happens when documents or templates contain
macros.

I accept your assertion that the endnote add-in throws up this message, but
confirming that here is not straightforward. I *do* have Norton AV installed
and uninstalling is not a simple matter of just turning it off. I'm sorry
but I do not have the facility to arrange a clean install at this time.

But you are right. It is puzzling, and definitely something alien :(
