I had only 1 reply which did not resolve my problem of the 6/7/2004 , so here it is again as it is still with me , and I did not explain clearly the problem anyway , so ... When I go to , HELP and SUPPORT >TOOLS > Computer Information > "View a list of Microsoft Software on this Computer".... I see listed 2 entries for CTFMON.EXE apparently identical and dated the same date . I would think I have done something twice( I think I may have downloaded something) but cannot remember what I have done .I briefly read through the article refered to in the reply by JJ , and though the article refered to CTFMON.EXE the article does not mention my OS , Windows XP Home Edition . Can someone tell me how to remove either or both the CTFMON.EXE entries , as it seems I should not even have 1 , though I do not know what my Computer is doing with 1 CTFMON.EXE ! Thankyou for any help

Can I Remove the Ctfmon.exe File?
Removing the Ctfmon.exe might cause problematic behavior in your Office XP
programs, so removing it is not recommended. To prevent Ctfmon.exe from
running, follow these steps.

There should be two. One in the windows\system32 folder - this is the
working copy. The backup copy will be in windows\dllcache
OR in Windows\ServicePackFIles\i386.

If the working copy becomes damaged or accidentally deleted, it will be
automatically replaced. System File Protection will copy it from the backup
location and to the windows\system32 folder.

I have done a search and have found 2 CTFMON.EXE files on the computer
.1. CTFMON.EXE-0E17969B.pf in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch and 2.
ctfmon in C:\Windows\system32 .I did not do a complete search the
last time I looked for CTFMON.EXE .

These are not two of the same file. The names are not even the same.

The prefetch item is a *reference* to ctfmon. The reference is used by the
"optimization" routines built in to XP and used when you run disk
defragmenter.
I read on the Discussion Group that Windows XP removes unused drivers and
other software if the software is not needed or used for a while . Is
that true ?

You read the XP removes what drivers and software from where? Prefetch? If
that's what you mean - supposedly yes. Unused or uninstalled items will
eventually "age" and drop out of the prefetch data collection. Note that it
is also possible for them to hang around a bit longer than the software or
drivers that they represent. However since these are just references, they
take up relatively very little space.
I wondered whether Windows XP would remove the duplicated entry of the
CTFMON.EXE file in the List of Microsoft Software on my computer.

The two files you have mentioned are not duplicates. You do not have two
ctfmon.exe files. You have ctfmon.exe and you have a prefetch reference to
ctfmon.exe.

I remembered a comment about drivers , not specific drivers , and I think I noticed the 2 files were written differently .Thanks very much Sharon .
