I have recently begun to experience problems with my laptop's ability to
view web pages. Instead of trying to load the site as normal, it attempts to
download it as a file, prompting me to save it. Obviously, regardless of
whether I click "Save" or "Cancel", it fails to download anything. The
internet connection itself is fine. Programs such as AIM that require
connection are functioning normally.

The computer is an HP Pavillion and it is running XP and Internet Explorer.
This has been occurring for about 2 weeks now, and HP Tech Support was no
help at all. Looking for any possible suggestions for fixes. Thank you.

Do you recognize a common problem from my description, or is this a general
suggestion?...please keep in mind, IE isn't working, so I can't check out
any hyperlinks...

No, nothing recognized and no specific fixes come to mind.

Unless System Restore can return the machine to its condition pre-dating the
problem and if the problem is caused by hijackware, I'm afraid you'll have
to use another machine to access the links and download anti-malware tools
for use on the problem machine, John.

Or reinstall Windows.

Hi,
Agreeing with PA Bear, it sounds like a malware problem.

But, some steps which might help (in some way.)
Login as another user with admin privileges, or from the machine's default
administrator account (safe mode) and delete the Temporary Internet Files
folder for the affected user account.

From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." That may allow IE to work.
You should re-enable browser extensions after resolving the problem, or now,
if it
didn't help.

XP SP2: IE> Tools> Manage add-ons, disable unknown or unnecessary add-ons.

Download (from another machine) Opera 8 (3.6 MB)
http://www.opera.com/?cimg=2 or Mozilla Suite (11 MB)
http://www.mozilla.org/download.html You will, at least have a working
browser so that you can visit help sites and download malware removal
programs.

Try reregistering the DLLs listed in this article:

If SP2 was installed as an update, reinstalling SP2 may help.
