I appear to have 2 versions of messenger on my computer,
or 1 version that works 2 different ways.

If I go onto messenger 6.2 through start>messenger 6.2,
everything works fine. If I go onto messenger any other
way, clicking system tray icon or through hotmail, I only
get half a product with the web cam and audio not working
and I get prompted to upgrade messenger. If I do this it
works ok for that visit but then returns to normal

Thanking you in anticipation

Les

Greetings Les,

Actually on Windows XP, you can have two Messenger clients installed -- Windows Messenger 4.x
which comes with Windows XP and MSN Messenger 6.x, which you install separately.

You should however, see MSN Messenger 6.2 in the notification area/system tray as well. You
may want to disable Windows Messenger from starting and tell MSN Messenger 6.2 to start
instead. To do so, open Windows Messenger up (click Start, then Run, type "msmsgs" and click
OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run this Program when Windows starts'
or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on version) as well as 'Allow this
program to run in the background' or 'Allow Windows Messenger to run in the background'
(depending on version).

Then start MSN Messenger 6.2, click the Tools menu, then Options, then General tab, and make
sure that the "Automatically run Messenger when I log on to Windows" is selected.
