This is my fifth day in Movie Maker hell and no end is in sight... is it
possible to install 2 versions of Movie Maker on the same machine? I had to
reinstall XP Home and before I updated it to SP2, I tried the MM1 version
and to my suprise, it saved a video perfectly in under a minute that takes 20
minutes or more to save on 2.1 (identical files) but 2.1 is much easier to
use for editing, which it does perfectly. Is it possible to use one for
editing and the other for saving?

yes, and there's other reasons to use both versions... my website's Setup
MM2 in XP > MM2.0 page... has a section about keeping MM1 to use with MM2

I don't know of anyone who has MM1. I have my WindowsMe recovery disk. Is
there any way to get it from there?

Actually, the version I need is 1.1.2427.0 from XP Home as I installed it
from my recovery disk.

Okay, I now have both versions 2.1 and 1.1 up and running. The three files
mentioned in the article were already present in my MM2.1 folder. I
registered the file wmmutil.dll as per the instructions. Now I can't import
the project file that I made in MM2 into MM1. I get an error message:

An error occured when opening this file. Either the selected file is not a
Windows Movie Maker project file or the project file is corrupted.

Also, the files were not exactly the same size as listed in the article but
they had the same name. Should I have registered the file (wmmutil.dll) as it
was already present?

you can't go backwards with project files.... MM1 can't handle those made in
MM2.

file size readouts vary with the viewers... close is good enough. It doesn't
hurt to re-register a DLL... and some don't need registering.

Thank you for the help. It's just frustrating to think that I made many many
videos with MM1 and WindowsMe with never a problem. I guess newer isn't
always better. But I am losing my fear of .dll files and renaming stuff.

Now MM1 is doing the same thing, different error message. Wmvcore.dll. Will
this thing ever run out of .dll's to mess up?
