I recently upgraded to msngr 6, during installation it
asked to exit old msngr from tool bar, i couldn't so
installed anyway, now i have both and the old one
generally signs in first so the new one gives a
message"already signed in at another location", have to
then sign in again. Not sure how to fully rid myself of
the old version, tried uninstalling reinstalling, but no
change. Hope someone can help.
Cheers

Try right clickin on all of the icons and folders for the
old messenger and deleting them. Technically the old one
is no longer installed on your computer, but the icons
keep running it. I had the same problem and that fixed it
for me! Hope it helps.

I had this problem too and was told that Widnows
Messenger (included with XP) and MSN Messenger are two
totally different IM Clients. This was the advice I was
given:

"It's not an older version...it's a completely different
IM client. First of all, be sure you have upgraded
Windows Messenger v4.7 to the latest build (2009). You
can get it at Windows Update. You will need to do this
in order for some advanced features of MSN Messenger to
work correctly. Then launch Windows Messenger, click
Tools->Options->Preferences and uncheck "Run when Windows
Starts" and "Allow to run in the background". This will
keep it from starting and logging on automatically. You
can hack it off your computer. However, doing so will
also result in losing a lot of functionality in MSN
Messenger. Let me be more precise: not having the latest
build of Windows Messenger v4.7 means some functionality
of MSN Messenger v6.0 won't work *correctly*. Not having
it at all means some functionality of MSN Messenger won't
work *period*."

Hope that helps! Anyway, here's a useful link too, it
explains the difference between Widnows Messenger and MSN
Messenger! http://messenger.msn.com/Help/#LQ3

Good luck! :o)
