Hope someone can assist...i installed xp on partition d and it appears it is
on c as well. I cannot get it to restart without going thru a bunch of
"steps". the msg i receive is "disk error" ctrl+alt+del to restart but then
the same problem.

Have some computer knowledge, but think I have BIOS commands wrong. What do
i have wrong?

thanks for any help

Hi Diane,

First, start/run C:\boot.ini

Copy/paste the contents into the reply. Also, when you open Windows
Explorer, do you have system folders on both C and D?

What are your current BIOS settings for the drive?

Start/run diskmgmt.msc, which drive is set as active (when you right-click
the active drive, the option to make it active will be grayed out)?

Well, i think we r getting close to solving, i sure do appreciate the help!
this is from the boot.ini:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect

diskmgmt.msc results: c is healthy (system) and d is healthy (active)..when
i rt click on both, the option to make active is grayed out??
As far as BIOS settings: the only way i know toget there is to restart comp
and that is where i get hung up..is there another way? thanks so much for
the help

Hi Diane,

Right click the C drive in Disk Manager, set it as the active partition.
This is the source of your problem, the bootstrap is looking at D, and the
files it wants are on C.
