2 users running IE6 on the same account?

TRABEM

We are in the process of converting from 3 users to 1 user, which
means each family member will not have their own custom IE6 setup.

Can I install 3 full versions of IE6 in different directories, and
create separate shortcuts to each?? This would allow each family
member to have their browser customized. Is there an easier way?

Thanks all.

T

PS:

Yes........I know this is probably answered at Microsoft.com and
possibly in this newsgroup or google might provide a link to the
answer.

I've tried all three methods, each gets thousands of hits, can't seem
to find an appropriate series of keywords to narrow the search
down......there's so much written for IE that it's nearly impossible
to search and get meaningful results.

Any help appreciated.

I think it is possible to install IE more than one time just by installing
into a different folder each time but IE is a big program and takes a lot of
room as it is so installing 3 on one computer would cause it to run slower

No this would not be possible, because of the nature of Internet explorer,
being a critical componet of windows xp. Windows will not allow you to
install itnernet explorer to anything but it's default location. can I ask
why you decided to remove the 2 other windows users from the system?

OK, thanks. I seem to remember that bug from years ago, now that you
mention it.

I know I can make separate bookmarks, but I like my security settings
much higher than my wife and daugher do and they both have strong
preferences regarding their home pages and their automatic password
retention for playing online games.

My desktop is messey as I have so many projects going at hte same
time...they tend to keep their squeaky clean.

For us to try and run the same settings in IE (sharing a common setup)
would be like mixing oil and water. As a family, we get along well, as
computer users, even my 8 year old daughter has very strong
preferences (she speaks fluent computer).

Can I make different .ini files and/or start IE from command lines
with a .bat file (make shortcuts to the .bat file)? Is there any other
way???

Sure you can ask, and I'd be glad to tell you!

We have a long standing speed problem, that has gotten worse in the
last couple of months. I've done everything to try to diagnose the
problem, and I'm not even getting a hint despite all the work I've
done.

So, it looks like a total reinstall of XP is in order. There seems to
be an XP bug that requires maintenance done under one user to be
repeated under each user separately.including installs and uninstalls.
This is a real bummer, and it also means that sygates firewall won't
run (they don't support multiple users). Norton systemworks won't run
unless we all have administrative privileges........so, we might as
well all be operating under the same user name.

The speed problem makes switching between users nearly impossible
because of the long delays......so the obvious answer is to create a
single user and not to be bothered with the additional problems
associated with maintaining the system for 3 users.

Can I ask if you run clean up disk? Also you should check the startup folder
because if a lot of things are stuck there it slows the pc way down.
It seems like every program wants to stick something into start up, One
virus program puts 6 files in start up!

No, it isn't.

It is not a bug. IE is so integrated into Windows that it can't be
done. What you can do if you don't want separate Users is to buy a copy of
Windows for each user and install it on a different partition.

You aren't even close-but thanks for writing. I have ZERO items in the
startup folder, and use Norton to keep the Internet history, temporary
files and similar items at minimum levels.

The only items running in the system tray (now called notification
area) are the mouse, Norton antivirus, volume control and the power
monitor (necessary because it's a laptop).

It just goes to sleep with the HD stuck running for 5 to 10 seconds at
a time, for no reason. The cursor changes to an hourglass, telling us
to wait. Nothing responds to kb entries, sometime the mouse won't even
move (till it gets good and bloody well ready). We have abnormal
termination of programs because they time out and we have to close
them manually.

Everything checked so far comes up as being ok.

40 processes running, all the XP resource hogging niceties are
switched off), system resources run 98 percent available with nothing
running. Page faults are practically non-existent, and ram never comes
within 50 MB of being all used (have 384 MB, recently upgraded from
256 MB).

I run an electronic circuit simulator (Spice), which is
computationally intense. Our computer runs the Spice benchmark circuit
exactly 3 times slower than other comparable computers.

We often get errors when booting up or shutting down.this or that
windows program can't load because the time limit has expired.

It doesn't not have any virus, and there are no adware/browser
hijackers.

Many times, it will not play an mp3 without skips and pops...even with
nothing else running.

The download speed is down 30 percent from what it should be (compared
to our neighbors on the same ISP).

Any suggestions about multiple user IE6?

Thanks,

T

Well if the pc was running fast then starts to run slow there has to be a
reason so if that isn't it I would look for a virus. There is one that
attaches to exe. files and makes your pc run slow. The virus wasn't picked up
by either norton or macfee. A free trail program @
http://www.kasperskylabs.com/ did pick it up and clean it.
One of the new ones is the Virus.DOS.Zhengxi some info: The code of the
virus receives the control from different points depending on the infection
way, but in all cases the destination is the polymorphic decryption routine.
In EXE files (appending) the decryption routine receives the control
immediately when an EXE file is loaded into memory for execution, in EXE
files (inserting) - from the code of loader (see EXE infection), in the files
linked with infected OBJ/LIB files - from CALL instruction (see OBJ/LIB
infection), the COM droppers have JMP instruction at their beginnings, that
JMP brings control to the decryption routine.

Like I said not every virus program picks this up when you scan because of
the way the virus is written, which is why you can have it and not know
