2 Terabyte memory cards coming in 2011
1 TB and 2 TB SD cards to follow the first 64 GB SDXC card
The SD Association, created by Panasonic, SanDisk and Toshiba, had
last year announced the SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity)
technology that theoretically allows for storage capacity upto 2 TB,
or 2000 GB. With this, memory card storage capacity is all set to take
a big jump from the existing 32 GB to a whopping 2 TB. The prices of 2
TB SDXC cards are going to be a bit high in the beginning, but we know
that they won’t stay high for long as high volume production kicks in.
A time frame has not been announced for the release of the 2 TB SD
card.
Current SD memory card storage capacities top off at 32GB in SDHC
cards, while some companies are already launching 64 GB memory cards.
However, 2 TB SD cards would be able to store about 100 HD movies, 480
hours of high definition video recording, 136,000 fine quality photos
according to Wired.com SDXC technology will also raise data transfer
speeds from the current high of 30 Mbps on a 200x SD card to 104 Mbps,
although the technology will be worked upon to further raise speeds to
300 Mbps.
At the CES 2010, Panasonic had launched its 32 GB and 64 GB SD cards.
The company said that they will try to introduce their first 1 TB SD
card by 2010-end, followed by 2 TB SDXC cards in 2011. If they stick
to that, we can expect their competitors also to introduce their 1 TB
and 2 TB SD cards around the same time.
Of course, we have yet to see the 32 GB DC cards or micro SD cards in
the market. Once they are here, they wold be followed by 64 GB and 128
GB cards. So it is definitely going to be a while before we see the
first 2 terabyte memory card.
Panasonic has already announced that it intends to produce a 64GB card
using SDXC technology that may be launched by next year. Sony and
SanDisk are also set to collaborate to make SDXC technology a part of
Sony’s Memory Stick range, so along with the first 2TB SD card, we are
likely to see the first 2 TB memory stick too.
The 2TB card will become very useful when it releases as modern
consumer electronics such as camcorders, digital cameras and music
devices are producing high quality data that also translates into lots
of memory space. The only drawback the SDXC technology would face
would be its incompatibility with older devices.

recording in camcorders, digicams that shoot photos at 22 megapixel
resolution and in RAW format, and high quality audio files on your
music players.
