2 Systems with 2 network cards each and two networks.

I've recently setup a small home network composed of two PCs (Win 95 and Win
XP Pro) and a US Robotics router. Zone alarm on both PCs.
I was a bit concerned of File and Print Shareing over TCP/IP.
So, I purchased another two NICs (one for each computer) so I could use a
separate network and a different protocol (IPX/SPX or Netbios) for File and
Print Shareing.

The problem is that on the Win 95 PC I have two identical cards and I do not
know how to distinguish them so I could bind the right protocol to the right
card. Of course I could do it by experimenting.
Is there any way to rename this cards in Network Properties so I could
easyly identify them?

If it didn't identify the cards as card1, card2 just switch
your cables around if you chose wrong the first time

however...considering that you have a firewall...I don't think you needed to
use two cards / machine

If you aren't using TCP/IP for file/printer sharing then you don't need the
extra network cards.

Also, you're more likely to have problems with ZoneAlarm then you will with
hackers. Why the software firewall when you have a hardware one?

of addresses on Trusted Zone. It works fine. I'm not sure though how it
would handle IPX/SPX or Netbeui.

Yes... in the TCP/IP settings you can uncheck the file and printer sharing.
What sort of problems with ZoneAlarm? I've set it to work with my DHCP range

I've read NAT is not enough. Even though it's quite effective on scans (I've
seen lots of attempts in the router log).

A virus scanner and hardware firewall is all you should need. If you
install lots of software then a spyware scanner like AdAware is useful too.
ZoneAlarm can be helpful if you have kids or install a lot of stuff as well,
but it breaks often and can be hard to repair.

TCP/IP is not a problem for file/printer sharing if you're using a
non-routable IP range. A Google search will reveal all those ranges,
but the typical default used by almost all routers, 192.168.0.n, is
non-routable. You do not need the 2nd network adapter nor any
protocol other than TCP/IP.

Zonealarm is best at preventing OUTGOING traffic, trojans and
malware/plugins that try to phone home or open new, common ports the
firewall will pass by default. Even so, it can't do anything about
plugins for established "safe" apps.. for instance if someting
piggybacks on IE, both Zonealarm and the router may let it though,
making it important to keep up with some Mickeysoft updates and run
security scans at regular intervals, depending on exposure risk.
