I have 2 pcs at home, both running XP Pro. Both have LAN cards. I have been trying for a long long time to set up a network between the two, but somehow it just wont work. i hv tried setting the network up on the Netbios protocol, as well as TCP/IP. ive run the network setup wizards and chosen the correct options, ie the internet sharing one on the pc with the cable modem, and the 'accessing internet thru other pc' one on the pc without any direct internet access. Both pcs have the lan card drivers installed properly and both are showing the 'Local Area Conection Speed 100.0 Mbps icons'. The lights on both the lan cards are also on.

I want to use this network to share internet, files, priner, scanner (if possible) and to play games like CS, Red Alert, Unreal Tournament, etc.

Could anyone please provide me a deatiled, step by step guide on how to accomplish this.

thanks a lot
Danish
PS: Ive already done everythin mentioned on this site and still nothing works. http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net-update.asp#next

How are you linking the cable modem in? Via USB?
If you aren't using a hub, are are using a cross over
cable aren't you? I mean an RJ45 UTP cable.

Moot out ...

I am a complete biff, but I have followed every step to connect my PC with
my laptop. The connection is live, I AM using a X-over cable, each system
lists its network places but I cannot for the life of me get each system to
see the other. I have tried fixing IP and submask as described in various
tutorials but no joy.

Are there key settings that I am missing? Firewalls? Sharing (although \I
thought that the wiz made the shared folder visible automatically).

AArrrrghhhh!! Any advice that you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Nick

Can I imply that you are just hooking a cable between the
two? You have to cross two of the wires like the
old "null modem" cable. You'll have to look up which two.
Or use a hub.

Hi fella,
first thing to ensure you have is network connectivity.

are the NIC driver loaded and working okay? look in device
manager. are you using TCP/IP? ensure each NIC has a
protocol like TCP/IP bound to it. NetBEUI was the easiest,
but forget that and stick to TCP/IP. assign static
addresses to each NIC with correct subnetmask. maybe use
192.168.1.1 subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 on one machine,
and 192.168.1.2 subnetmask of 255.255.255.0 on the second
machine. then try to sit on the first machine and try to
ping the other.

unless you can get this working you can forget everything
else.

typical gotchas are:

NIC drivers not loading maybe due to IRQ conflicts [less
common these days with newer gear]

duff UTP cable

check you have a cross over cable - check the pin out of
it! use a multimeter and check this ping out ...

1 <--> 3
2 <--> 6
3 <--> 1
4 <--> 4
5 <--> 5
6 <--> 2
7 <--> 7
8 <--> 8

----
-----------------

-----------------
pin1 --> pin8

see how you get on with that :o)

Thanks moot

I have managed to get the NICs to connect and I have now managed to transfer
files but it seems really slow (a 4 Mb mp3 takes about 10 seconds). Also,
when I have m,apped the drive, it loses the connection following a reboot.

Any tips on which user accounts I need to establish on both machines? And I
would be grateful on any tips you have on increasing speed (MTU values) and
making sure that I dont lose my mapped drives every time I reconnect.

Many thanks - really appreciate it

doing the maths that doesn't seem to bad a network speed
if its a 10 Mb network.

ensure you have ticked the "reconnect at logon" box when
you map a drive. also you can use a script to map these
drive like this ...

net use g: /delete
net use g: \\machinename\share-name

that's often a lot quicker and easier

moot out ...

Thanks Moot!!

Just another query - I am running a Belkin USB 10/100 Ethernet on my Host
system as I only have the one NIC (which I use for the DSL connection).
Could you explain what the 10/100 refers to? Is this "Ethernet" or "Fast
Ethernet"? I am content if the formaer as I am doing about 1-2 seconds per
Mb - but should I be going faster?

Thanks (again)
