Hi I have 2 PC's, both running XP. I have one printer (HP 950) which
is connected to one of the PC's via a USB connector.

Both PC's are connected to a D-Link DSL-504.

Can anyone please advise if it is possible for both PC's to access the
one printer? If so, could anyone please point me towards an idiot
proof set of instructions?

Peter - there are two possibilities:
1) If your printer has a parallel port connector as well as the USB
connector, you can connect the other PC via the parallel port - you will
need to use the correct driver on the parallel comp.

2) Alternatively, use printer sharing by going to the machine hosting the
printer and going START/PRINTERS & FAXES and right clicking the printer and
select 'sharing'. Go to the other comp and you should see the printer.

The advantage of (1) above is that you only need the one computer booted up.
In (2) the printer host machine must be booted in order to print from the
other machine.

Another way is to use a router that includes a print server, such as the
SMC7004ABR. Connect each PC to the router with a straight-through CAT 5
cable to a NIC in the PC and connect your printer to the router print server
outlet. Follow the router instructions to add the printer to each PC. Then
either PC will have access to the printer, whether or not the other PC is
turned on.

This may sound difficult, but it is amazingly simple.

You will either need a printer share box-- one which is usb connected
(2 usb in, 1 usb out).
