its only atemporary thing, so i think that i`ll go for the firewire solution
because its cheaper.
as far as sp2 goes, it was installed on both machines but i go so many
problems, firewall problems, ftp problems, a whole bunch of stuff went wrong
and i didnt have the time to fix it, so i just went back to sp1 and started
using firefox for a little more security.
Umm, firefox the browser does nothing to secure a windows PC
from being on the 'net in this context. Among other things
the router does port-blocking, including outgoing if you
have inclination to set that up too.
In other words, they are two completely separate and
unassocated security risks both present, one does not
replace the other as a "shield" in any way shape or form...
you'd still need firefox (or similarly, disabling IE & other
applications, featues) to plug that hole(s) if you were to
use a router.
At the very least I strongly suggest that after you get it
set up, the first thing you do is head over to grc.com or
symantec (forget the URL at the moment) where you can do an
automated port-scan else there are utilities that show what
ports you have open. It's not an assurance of security but
if you had the router you'd have logs that show just how
often ports are scanned by ??? You might also consider
another firewall if XP's isn't working for you.
It's all a lot more of a hasstle than plonking down $0-30
for the router, not that it completely replaces these
measures either, but it's the best first line of defense.
