2 operating systems?

I am trying to install Windows XP. However, I get an
error message that it is not a good idea to have 2
operating systems on 1 partition. I assume that it
thinks that I want both Windows 98 (my current system) as
well as XP at the same time. In fact, I want to
completely delete 98 and the old files and start anew
with XP.

Does anyone know how I get XP to completely overwrite 98?

Thanks,

Siu

If you have your 98 data backed up or don't care about it just change your
bios to boot from the xp cd and follow the prompts to format your c drive
and then install. You will need the 98 cd if you have the upgrade version
of xp for verification.

Hi Siu,

Sounds like your are choosing new install, which is ok as long as you run
the options to format and clean install. You can also upgrade, which will
totally replace the Win98 system, but leave your files and settings intact.

The instructions below will enable you to do as you wish. Remember to back
up your data if it is kept on the Windows 98 drive as that drive will loose
all information if you follow these instructions.

One other thing, before following the instructions below, while at the
Windows 98 desktop you might want to run the compatibility wizard to be sure
you don't run into any issues that might block setup. Place the XP CD in
the drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System
Compatibility."

If everything checks out, follow the instructions below for a clean install:

Boot with the XP CD in the drive. When you see the message on the boot
screen to "Press any key in order to boot from the CD," do so.

After loading drivers and files, you should be taken to a screen with
the following:

To Setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To Repair a Windows XP Installation using Recovery Console press R.
To Quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

In your case, press ENTER.

Agree to the License agreement by pressing F8.

You will then be taken to a screen with two options.

To repair the selected Windows XP installation press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing,
press ESC.

This will bring you to a partition map where you
can delete, create and format partitions.
Select the drive you wish to format, delete the partition, then create a new
partition, format as desired and continue with XP installation.
