2 mb VS 8 mb hd cache

Definatly. I would get a smaller 8mb cache drive than a bigger 2mb one
without thinking twice.
 
Is there a noticeable difference between 2mb and 8mb cache in a 7200 speed
hd??
XP pro, P4 2.4 512 cache?

GIven you probably already have 256meg of memory or 512 meg
I would be surprised if your were any better off.

Yes. But no. Generaly, you should get a _bit_ of performances if you are a
home user. However, more cache usualy gets handy with several drives on
channal (but i suppose you are talking about (S)ATA, so there isn't much
help about that), large transfers of small files, but basicaly, if you
have a continious transfers, than larger cache won't help. But if you have
frequent reade/write of small files, than you should feel the difference.

I can't see the point of it as surely software could achieve the same effect
with
existing motherboard memory.

Then obviously you are not awared how the hard disk works.
 
Biggest reason to pick 8MB over 2MB cache... most of the
2MB drives only have a 1yr warranty, 8MB drives usually
have 3yr warranties.

(Not 100% true in all cases, but almost every drive I've
looked at is that way.)

In the past this was true, with a manufacturer's higher priced offerings
having the 8MB cache, but today more and more lower priced drives have 8MB
and the warranty may be only 1 year. For example, Western Digital JB, 8MB
cache drives, used to have 3 yr. but now only 1 yr. in the _retail_
version.

Er.... The CPU cache has NOTHING to do with the speed of the HDD.....
There are lots of good books out there that'll give you a grounding in
basic computer hardware issues - I'd recommend you start with:
