How do i fully utilize 2 lan ports? I have it set up as 2 network
connections but i want to route specific network activity to each
connection. Is this possible?? Trying to do this on WinXp64.
Thanks in advance
Well it depends upon how you connect to the internet. If through a
normal telephone line you need to buy an adsl modem router. This will
plug directly to both computers and to your telephone line. It will
also need to be set up as well with username and password before it can
connect to your ISP, which you will do by connecting either one of your
computers to it via lan and logging on to it.
If through a cable service then you probably need a cable router. Think
that's what they are. Basically they have one input socket that allows
connection to your cable modem and then any number of network sockets
for connecting to each of your computers. This doesn't need setting up,
but you're most likely going to have to completely power off the ISPs
cable modem first by unplugging its power supply and then powering it
back up so it can re-detect the first MAC address (this being the cable
router that you will then plug it into) as they can be tied to only one
MAC address. You may be best contacting your ISP and asking them about
what you need to do if you want to replace your computer, will the modem
work with it and what you need to do if it doesn't.
The cable router doesn't need to be configured in any way it should just
work.
Anyway, once all is working you should be able to plug your 2nd machine
into one of the other network ports and the routers will do the rest.
