Subject: XP Temporary install?

Hi,
I have an odd question. I just bought my son a 160 gb
hard drive for his birthday, but I need to put XP on my
computer so that I can partition the new drive. I have an
XP CD, but I want to install it on my computer just long
enough to format and partition the drive to its full
capacity. It won't do that unless I have XP and at least
service pack 1.
Problem is, I want to send the XP CD to my son with the
drive, so his computer will see the entire capacity.
We're both using Win 98 right now. I plan on going back
to 98 after I'm done setting up the drive for him. Will I
be able to set his drive up without activating the
install?
I don't want it to activate until he has it, up in
Canada. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!!
