Hi, I have 2 hard disks in my 1 cpu. 1 has XP Pro then
the other is Win 98. I am planning to remove Win 98 and
install Win XP Pro using the same installation CD. Is
this OK? Or I have to buy a license or another XP CD? The
sticker shows CD 1-2CPU. Does this mean I can install XP
into my other Hard disk (in 1 cpu)?

If you want to do another installation so that you have 2 then you need to
buy an additional license for the second install.

The End User Licesed Agreement (EULA) is clear on this mater.

Do a Start ... Run ... winver and click on the link to view the EULA

1. GRANT OF LICENSE. Microsoft grants you the following
rights provided that you comply with all terms and
conditions of this EULA:
1.1 Installation and use. You may install, use, access,
display and run one copy of the Software on a single computer,
such as a workstation, terminal or other device ("Workstation
Computer")

The key here is section 1.1 where it does state that you "... You may
install, <...> run one copy of the Software on a single computer..."

This clause prohibits the creation of a dual boot configuration without
multiple licenses for Windows XP. Since you need to install it more then
once. (Using other tools to get around the install such a Ghost etc do not
invalidate this requirement).

The 1-2 CPU means it will support systems with 1 or 2 cpu's and has nothing
to do with 2 hard drives. I guess I would have to wonder why would you
remove 98 and install XP when you already have XP installed on the other
disk?

okay one way around it is if you just bought it, make a
backup copy then go to the store and exchange it for a
new cd (tell them it has errors or something and MS told
you to exchange it) and use that one for the new install.

Beware of course this is probably illegal.

Hi Mike, Thank U for replying. I thought 1-2CPU means
can install once or two times in a cpu. It is confusing
earlier. I do not want to have activation problem that is
why I have to ask.

Thank you. I'll not install XP again in another HD
because it's not proper and it is illegal. The reason
why I want to remove Win 98 is because I thought 1-2CPU
means I can use it for 2 HD. I'm wrong so I'll forget it.

Windows XP Pro will install and run on a computer that has
one or two CPUs on one motherboard. Windows XP Home will
only support one CPU.

With hyperthreaded CPUs you will see a phantom or virtual
CPU listed with either XP Pro or Home.

Only the boot hard drive counts in reference to activation,
you could have an array of 8-10 hard disks but on one mobo,
one computer.
