2 hard drives

I am trying to set up 2 hard drives, 1 will be used for operating
system and programs, the other will just be for music storage.

I have an IBM Aptiva, AMD-K6, 600 MHz, 486 ram, 350 watt power, cd
burner, DVD rom, main hard drive is a Maxtor 20 gig and I want to use a
Seagate 10 gig for storage. I am running Windows XP Professional.

When I hook them up I get half way through the Windows boot screen then
it freezes. When I boot in safe mode I am able to see both drives.

The jumpers are set up with the Maxtor as master and Seagate as slave.
What can I be doing wrong?
 
Sounds more like problems with your video driver than with your hard
drive. In safe mode, try deleting your video card, then rebooting your
system. XP should redetect it and allow you to install the proper
drivers.
 
What would my video driver have to do with hard drives? My computer
freezes when its loading with both hard drives.

Interrupt or DMA conflicts? If it was a fundamental
problem with the drives you should not get as far as you do.

Ignore Arnie, he has lots of insight and clues about physics, unlike "other" people.
 
He is right about probably a conflict with some driver or software that
does not get loaded in during safe mode. You can try what was
suggested. Also, download and use msconfig, and turn off some of the
stuff that loads at boot time and see if it will boot up. If yes, then
slowly add things back in. That might work.

That is hardly what he said. The problem has likely to do with drive
letter changing or with detecting the second drive during bootup.
You can try what was suggested. Also, download and use msconfig, and turn
off some of the stuff that loads at boot time and see if it will boot up.

Or check the boot logs and see where it stopped.
 
Folkert, what is your evidence for the below?
