I'm in charge of some 100 PC's and the dc is windows server 2003. Since I'm
quit new administrator I see that the server name as reflected in the
computer properties is different than its name if I ping to him with
tracert.
Can someone advise where does it take its second name?

Regards

I suggest you post in microsoft.public.windows.server.networking, and
describe your setup - what name you expect to see, and what you're seeing.
Also might post the unedited output of an ipconfig /all from your server.

Depends what you mean. Is the difference between a FQDN (with the domain part
added) and a netbios name, or are they totally different?

If the latter, then the server's DNS record has different information from
its actual (netbios) name in the System Control Panel. (Which is not a good
situation, it will lead to confusion)
