Hi there,
Is it possible that 2 DHCP server can co-exist in a domain?
Is it possible that 2 DHCP server can co-exist in a domain?
Richard G. Harper said:Yes, it is; but they must each serve addresses in a non-overlapping manner.
Perhaps a better questions is, why would you want two DHCP servers in a
domain?

Michael D. Ober said:Yes you can. First, search MS for DHCPEXIM and download it. DHCPEXIM
allows you to clone a DHCP server, right down to the current leases.
On your first DHCP server, run DHCPEXIM to extract the database to a file.
This file will be binary. Now install the DHCP server on your second server
and disable it. Run DHCPEXIM to import the file from the first server.
Now for the critical step. You cannot have both DHCP servers allocating the
same dynamic range of IP addresses. To prevent this, split the dynamic
allocation into half and manually exclude one half of your range from one
server and the other half from the other server. Now start the second
server and ensure both servers are "Authorized" in the domain by using the
DHCP MMC snapin.
When adding a reservation, you need to add the same reservation to both
servers as you cannot control which server responds to a DHCP Client's
discovery request.
As for why to do this - REDUNDANCY!
