2 DCs

I have a domain and two child domains. In the parent domain, I have three
DCs. I purchased 2 new servers to replace the DCs, and I want to optimize
FSMO roles. I know that the Infrastructure Master should not be a GC in a
multi-domain environment - is that referring to child domains?

Thanks

The Infrastructure Master is only used in multi-domain environments. In
single-domain environments it is defunct.

The IM should not reside on a GC if there are multiple domains, and there
are DCs in the domain in question (IM is a domain role) that are not GCs.

Which means that this is only an issue if you have more than one domain, and
not all DCs in a domain are GCs. If all DCs in a domain are GCs then the IM
is not needed in that domain and it therefore doesn't matter where it sits.

Your environment sounds small. I would therefore recommend that you make
all DCs GCs and forget about the IM ;-)

Thanks for the prompt response, I guess my question was does the presence of
child domains make it a multi-domain environment?

Yes. If there is more than one domain in the forest, then it is a
multi-domain environment.
