I have an external hard drive with 2 firewire ports and a USB port. Is
there any way to plug 2 computers into this one drive and allow them both to
access it?

Plug the drive into the machine that needs the fastest access to the
drive, and then share it over the network.

I'll give that a try. The reason I didn't at first was because I've heard a
lot of people have problems when sharing external drives.

It should work OK that way. I sometimes share a flash dongle on one computer
on the network when I need to refresh files on it and it has always worked
fine. The only downside I can imagine (haven't confirmed) might come up if
the computer sharing over the network had the external drive tied up when
you wanted to physically disconnect it.
