Yes but only use one for realtime scanning as it'll slow the system to
a crawl otherwise.

General rules are to never run two of the same kind of program at the
same time, as they will conflict with each other. a-v programs ...
firewalls ...

I'd recommend just staying with Avast!.

Why do you need two AV programs ? redundancy ? Marc
New, had pc 1 week and really do not know if 2 or whatever is needed.
Was thinking perhaps Avast may not be stopping everthing. Which one is
better????.

Most people here think pretty highly of AVG antivirus, I personally would
use AVG antivirus. Go to www.my-etrust.com, there's a link there to the
Microsoft partner pack, where you can download EZ antivirus free for one
year, it's a great antivirus program, a freebie from Microsoft.

Just only one Scanner of your own.
If you are not sure of your own virusscanner use an online-virusscanner
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

I would rather use one for memory-resident scanning and another for
on-demand use.

I think they will only conflict if both are running at the same time. So
once a week I turn-off Norton and run ANTIVIR. If I'm at a clients
house, I'll clean the machine with both STINGER and FPROT. Once I feel
safe putting it on the Internet I'll use HouseCall.

I haven't tried Avast or AVG yet, but I assume the concepts are the same.
