1st instance of explorer.exe hangs

The 1st instance I open of explorer.exe hangs for about 3
minutes. If I open a 2nd instance of explorer.exe, it
works fine, until the 1st one starts working, at which
time the second one hangs for 5 minutes. I have applied
the latest service pack for XP Pro.

What other programs/applications are running at the same
time?
