Is there any good article about transfer all of the roles
needed by the first dc built that is now broken with no
chance of recovery? I am going to build a new one with
a different name but need to remove the old name from AD
entirely.

Thanks

Do you currently have another functional DC? If so, you'll need to seize the
FSMO roles onto one of your remaining DCs...see MS KB 255504 for help. Also
make sure that this (or another) DC is set as a global catalog server.

If you don't have any working DC at the moment, it's a different story...

Thanks for the info.. I do have another working DC and it
is a GC as well. So that part is taken care of. It is the
seizing of the FSMO role that i need to work with.

Thanks again

Greetings!

Also, if you do not feel comfortable using ntdsutil ( which can be a bit
arcane ) then I might suggest taking a look at the following MSKB Article,
which nicely complements the MSKB Article that Lanwench suggested:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;255690&Product=win2000

Also, just for a general FYI - if you do a dcpromo that process will
transfer the FSMO Roles that the to-be-degraded DC might hold to another
available DC. I much prefer to do this myself, however. ntdsutil is the
best way to go!

Hallo - I think the only way you can *sieze* roles, as in, when the DC that
held 'em is dead (as opposed to transferring from a DC to another), is to
use ntdsutil... it looks scarier than it is. :-)

Great news - the KB article should help a lot, then.

Lanwench,

You are correct. To seize them requires using NTDSUtil. I did not read all
of the original post. My bad. When the DC that holds any of the five FSMO
Roles goes down - without any chance of recovery - then you are left with
one choice - ntdsutil.
