1st Contact Name NOT Highlighlit, requiring an extra name search s

I'm using Outlook 2003 SP2, under XP SP2.

Mostly, I'm in Mail and click on the button to go to Contacts and back
whenever I need to look up a contact. In Contacts, I use Detailed Address
Card view, although the problem I'm reporting occurs also in Address Card
View.

Problem: when going to Contacts from Email, it used to open Contacts with
the first contact already highlighted (the "file as" name only, at the top of
the individual contact white box), which enabled me to immediately start
typing the first few letters of the contact I was using. Some weeks ago,
perhaps after a security update change or the like, when going into Contacts,
the name is no longer highlighted. As a result, I need to click on the
Detailed Address Card radio button on the left pane in order to highlight the
first contact name and then be able to key in the first few letters of my
contact search. Is there a way I can return to the mode in which the first
name is highlighted without having to click on a radio button? THANKS!
 
Doubt the Security Update did it.
Stop using Outlook Today as the overlay for your root folder.
 
Thanks, Russ! As soon as I de-select the Outlook Today option from coming on
when Outlook opens, the problem is gone. But then as soon as I access
Outlook Today (even if just once), same situation returns. Is there a way
for me to set it up elsewhere so it does not have this negative effect?

Not that I know of. This appears to be a bug they decided not to fix.
