I build computers have noticed that after installing Windows XP Pro and the
motherboard drivers etc the connection works ok but is only 100, the
motherboard supports 1GB LAN and so does the switch it is plugged into.

This happens on a variety of ASUS motherboards and the only way to get it
working at 1GB is to power off & on the switch

perhaps auto-negotiated down ...

check all three pieces both PC's .. the hub/switch ... the cables ... make
sure they are "physically" capable of going gig'e

also try forcing gig on both end points ..

are they running in gig mode? check device status on each side ..

Also try forcing gig mode

You also need to be using good quality cables in order for the 1G
signals to work. 10, 100 and 1G networks all use the same basic
network cable connectors but 1G network signal seem to be using
different wires with-in the cable. 100 networks uses more wires than
just the plain 4 wires that 10 networks use.

yes understood, i had asked the original poster to check all ingredients
including cables ... auto-negotiate would have dropped card rate down if the
cables were crunk.

All cables are CAT6

did you try to force both PC's to go to gig mode? also make sure any QOS or
offload is set to off or atleast paired with each other so negotiation can
occur correctly.

If that fails try a different gig switch/router ... some consumer
switches/routers are half duplex or just poor ...

Furthermore, there is nothing wrong with the computer connecting at 1GB on
startup, but the intial installation of windows and then the NIC drivers it
would not connect at 1GB until I powered off the switch and turned it back
on again.
Is there something I need to do to the switch? or the modem/router that's
connected to it?
