Hi all.
im planning for a new machine now..
just wondering whether i should spend the extra $$ on faster cpu or extra
ram.
ie p4 2.8 with 1G ram or p4 3.0 with 512mb ram

which setup is better say in 2 yrs time..
this machine is mainly for multimedia use. dont intend to play 3d games
here...

do i really need 1G ??

thanks in advance

You'll be lucky to spot any difference between a p2.8 and a p3.0, so
definitely go for the 1Gig ram.

You will notice a BIG difference with 1 gig of ram when you have more
than one program and swap between them.

512 MB RAM is enough for most applications, but if you do serious image and video editing you will need more. Given the price diffence between a 2.8 Ghz and 3.0 Ghz processor for less than 10% increase in speed you are better to put your money in memory or hard drives e.g. a RAID array.

without a doubt the 1gb ram - 2.8Ghz & 3Ghz is minimum difference. Like
someone mentioned I doubt you will even recognise the difference without
using benchmarking tools.

For my money, I would go with the 1 Gb of RAM. For the CPU difference, I
doubt anyone would see that, unless you were running speed tests on the
machine. In all the P4 machines that we set up, we are using 2.6 gHz
processors with 1 Gb of RAM. We found this to be the most reasonable balance
at this time.
