19 Inch LCD Monitor For Gaming.

Hi,

I am planning buy a 19 inch monitor for gaming. I read that the Pixel
Response time has to be atleast 12ms for gaming. Also I am looking for
a monitor which has DVI Input.

Based on this spec, can people recommend me some monitors?

I have seen that the Hyundai 19 inch 8ms one seems to be cost
effective and selling quite well.

don't those things below 20ms have a 1 year warranty? do those things
burn out that early?

This is subjective. Compared to the image quality at 1280x1024 there will
be a noticeable reduction in sharpness. Compared to a good CRT at 1024x768
the sharpness will be about the same (IMO). Some people consider that to
be unacceptable degradation, others find it quite usable. I've never
noticed any significant need for sharpness in games anyway. But then I
don't play games 24/7 either.
 
Currently I am on a 17 inch CRT Monitor and I have read that gaming at
19 inch will be a different exprience altogether. And I guess I am not
so picky and can go ahead with buying this monitor.

If your very picky about not having and blurring with motion on the screen
then 8ms might not even be fast enough. Although lot of people consider
anything below 16ms to be fine for gaming. I tried a 16ms (Viewsonic VP201s
(same panel as the Dell 2001fp)) and did not notice any ghosting or even
blurring at first, but then I looked carefully while comparing it to my 19"
CRT and then the blurring was noticed. After noticing the blurring it
bugged me enough to not want to change from using my CRT for gaming for a
16ms monitor. I have not tried less than 16ms, but I have read that at 12ms
blurring is not very noticeable, 8ms the blurring is almost gone and very
hard to notice. So it really depends on how picky you are and or if you will
even notice anything without a very careful comparison. Also keep in mind
that the response time ratings are not always accurate and can be a lot
slower in some games.
I am very picky I guess , mainly because my 19" CRT is still working good
and I need a very good reason to replace it, so I am going to wait and see
how the new Viewsonic 4ms monitors perform. I think they did not actually
make a new monitor panel, but have a way of "exciting" the panel crystals
into responding faster. So hopefully they will really perform as a 4ms
monitor when playing games and not just be some gimmick.

I went from a 17 to a 19, both crt. The 19 is better of course and I
wouldn't go back to a 17, but I wouldn't call it a new experience. Going
from a 15 to a 17 was much more spectacular, and even that didn't change my
life. ;-)

But a 19" LCD is even bigger than a 19 CRT, so going from 17" CRT to a 19"
LCD is a bigger jump. My 17" CRT was actuality 15 3/4 " viewable screen
diagonally and a 19" LCD actually has a 19" diagonal viewable screen. So
from a 17" CRT to a 19" CRT is about a 2" jump and from a 17" CRT to a 19"
LCD is about a 3 1/4 " jump.
Also the colors may look more vibrant with an LCD and you may think it makes
the game look better, but fast response time LCD's don't always have large
viewing angles, and might not have the image quality if slower LCD's. Its
all a compromise and you have to judge and decide for yourself.
Unfortunately there are not too many LCD retailers (in the US that is) that
will let you return a monitor for a full refund if you don't like it.

Most online retailers have about the same return and exchange policies.
Usually the policy is that the monitor must have 8 or more dead pixels
before they exchange it for the same model and its up to them to find and
agree that the monitor actually has more than 8 dead pixels for them to give
an exchange.
I don't think problems with dead pixels is as bad as it use to be.

What I was talking about in my other post, was that the only way you can
really know if it performs good enough for you is to buy it and use it, but
if you don't like it and want to return it you will probably have to pay
about a 15% restocking fee plus shipping because that's seems to be the
usual return policy.

I checked ZipZoomFly and they say I can return for 3 dead pixels. Do
you think I should stop worrying about the dead pixel thing and just go
ahead and order? I have finalized on everything else and just checking
on this aspect.

If I dont worry about dead pixels then ChiefValue has the best price.

what about dell's "total customer satisfaction" guarantee...? i think
its 15 days of use and you can return it for any reason within that time
for a refund, as long as its in perfect resalable condition. i'm not
sure if this policy applies to LCDs as well but i checked their site and
couldn't find anything that said it didn't....

Yes, Dell has a full refund return policy (except shipping) for 21 day on
their monitors (I know, I returned one) but I don't know if it applies to
non-Dell brand products that they sell. Besides I don't think they sell the
Hyundai 19" LCD he is looking for. CompUSA has a new full refund 21 day
return policy also (you can return an online order to a store so no shipping
cost for return), but last time I looked they don't sell the Hyundai or and
8ms 19" either. Staples also has a full refund policy, but they don't have
very good selection of monitors.

It seems that the price of a monitor from a store with full refund policy
usually cost more than the stores with a 15% restocking fee. I guess you
have to decide if the lower price is worth the gamble of buying from the 15%
return fee store if you might want to return it or just buy from a full
refund place and pay the higher price.

I wouldn't worry about the dead pixels. Especially if your are playing games
because the stuck pixels probably wouldn't even be noticeable with all the
motion on the screen.

3 dead pixels is a good return policy , but I don't know if I would even
worry abot three dead pixels unless they are all stuck on (white) and very
noticeable. A dead pixel means that its not responding and could be stuck in
the off position and look like a very very small black dot, stuck on and
look white (usually shows up the most with dark screen) or stuck at a color
that may only be visible when there is opposite color on the screen. I
looked at my screen very carefully and kept thinking I saw dead pixels but
they were just specs of dust. I finally found a stuck pixel but it only
really shows up with blue color over it.

ZipZoomFly and Newegg.com are the places I usually order from online. Both
seem to have a good reputation. Newegg has a larger inventory but sometimes
ZipZoomFly has items that Newegg does not. Prices are usually about the same
although for this monitor ZZF is a little cheaper. Newegg has one day sales
and I remember they had this monitor on sale but who knows when they will
again.

I say if you think that this is the monitor you want, then go for it.

Are there any diagnostic utils that show dead pixels/ problems with a
LCD monitor that I can run as soon as it arrives?

If you don't notice anything wrong while doing normal things, then
don't worry about it.
 
Hi,

Just an update. Got the monitor and its working great. I am happy with
DVD viewing on it as well.
Installing games now. Will add the gaming update later.
