It is an APIPA address. This is what is allocated if no IP
has been assigned to a network adapter.

It means that:

1. The network connection is configured to obtain an IP address
automatically, and:

2. It was unable to communicate with a DHCP server to obtain an IP
address assignment.

You have the generic IP address. This means you are not
getting a TCP/IP address assigned through DHCP (your ISP,
Router or another server in your network should assign
the address. I am working on the same or a similar
problem. If I figure it out I will post the solution.

My linksys wireless nic is getting assigned a apipa instead
of getting an IP from the WAP. The connection settings are
for DHCP assignment of IP. The connection shows connected
and signal very good. Other clients are getting the IP
from DHCP on the WAP just fine (also runninx WinXP).

This only happens on one of the client pc's, none of the
others. Have substituted the wireless nics and the problem
stays with the pc using several nics.

Can this be fixed without re-installing windows and doing
all the updates?? If so, how??

Look for file sharing apps on the problem PC: Kazaa (not K-Lite) is
renowned for connection problems like this. Deinstall anything that
looks like a file sharing app or anything you don't recognize.

Q

what does IPCONFIG /ALL show you?

(to address Quaoar's comment about the virtual adapter)
