16 vs 32 bpp setting in Display Settings

System: WinXP Home SP2

Issue: bpp setting not staying at what I set it at

I right-click on desktop, select properties -> settings -> change Color
Quality from Medium (16 bpp) to Highest (32 bpp) and go about my
business. Upon reboot, setting gets changed back to 16 bpp.

Notes: I am running 800x600 resolution, 60 hz refresh rate (seemingly
horrible settings are simply due to machine being hooked into home
theater - its only job is to play back video files).

My ATI Multimedia Center software requires 32bpp be the setting for
viewing video. I would just prefer it is ALWAYS set to 32bpp, but
Windows apparently disagrees. After a reboot, first video launch asks
me if I'm cool with changing the setting to 32.

Any suggestions?

Thanks -

Hardware details would help. What graphics card do you have (and driver
version)?

Are you using ONLY home theater system as your "monitor"? That might be
the cause aswell; windows is unable to detect its capabilities properly
during boot up and reverts to lower settings to ensure compatibility.

(e-mail address removed) kirjoitti:

ATI Radeon 9250, Driver version 6.14.10.6467

The only display output the card is giving is via the composite video
out jack, which goes into a projector. There is no "monitor" per se
attached to the machine.

The verbiage of the message I get when I attempt to start playing back
a video file is as follows:

"EAZYLOOK required the display color quality to be set to 32 bits per
pixel. Would you like to change to 32 bits per pixel?"

This is curious, because as I understand it, EAZYLOOK is the portion of
the MMC software that has to do with the ATI remote control - a feature
I do not use. Based on that, I suppose if I were to uninstall the
EAZYLOOK app, the problem would go away (i.e., I would be able to view
videos in the medium brightness setting of 16 bpp). I do not recall if
EAZYLOOK was its own installation or its own option at the time of
installing the ATI software, but I do not see it listed in Add / Remove
Programs.
