16 Bit Windows Subsystem Error S32EVNT1.DLL

Years ago I uninstalled my Symantec antivirus software & since then
successfully have been using McAfee. Recently, I set up a Brother MFC-5440CN
printer/fax/copier/scanner & installed the MFC-5440CN MFL-ProSuite
software/driver(s). Now every time I boot up my Dell 8200 the following error
message appears:

16 Bit Windows Subsytem c:\Program~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL. An installable
Virtual Driver failed Dll initializaition. Chose Close to terminate the
application.

There is a choice of buttons: Close or Ignore.

If I close, I can continue, but the computer operates very sluggishly; if I
ignore, the error pops up frequently necessitating my clicking on ignore.

I understand that the reference to the Program~1\Symantec may be a hold over
in the registry from my uninstalling the software...even though a file search
using the word symantec turns up nothing.

Question: How can I eliminate the error message from appearing?

Question: To do so, must I eliminate/delete something in the registry? If
so, can someone provide me with a novice's step by step to do so.

I'd prefer not to have to "restore" my system to the day before the
printer/software installation, as it's been about a week and there's other
info in the system that I'd hope to avoid "reentering."

Thanks for any advice/direction/help.

Bob

Hi Jose,

The Symantec program was Norton Antivirus...and it's possible that the
uninstall process at the time (a couple of years ago, since I've had McAfee
for at least two) left something in the registry (at least that's what i've
been lead to believe). Anyway, if this is the case, how can I (should I?) get
the last vestige of the SNA program gone? The word symantec doesn't turn up
when I run search of all files using WinXP.

What Symantec product had you installed?

Hi Patti,

Thanks for link. Any thoughts as to whether this link, which specifies 16
Bit DOS-MS Subystem, would be equally applicable to a 16 Bit Windows
(presumably XP) Subsystem error?

Any thoughts about whether I should first work to remove the reference to
Symantec...especially since it doesn't turn up in a file search.

Again, thanks for thoughts.

Hi berzokrm,

See if the information in this MSKB article helps you to resolve the
problem:

"16 Bit MS-DOS Subsystem" Error Message When You Install a Program
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314452/EN-US/

Regards,

You're welcome for the link, and yes, it would be equally applicable to a 16
Bit Windows Subsystem error, as the Symantec KB provides the same solution
as well as referencing a similar MSKB article (the link to the MSKB article
is for WIN2K):

Error: "S32evnt1.dll. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed DLL
initialization"
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...80256dac00564a18?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam

The Symantec KB article mentions updating the Symevent files after editing
the registry. You need not perform that portion as you no longer have that
product installed.

As you previously mentioned, the reference to Symantec appears in the error
message due to the fact that the virtual device driver that is causing the
problem, S32evnt1.dll, was installed to the path displayed,
C:\Program~1\Symantec, removed during the uninstall, but the reference to
that driver in the Windows registry was not removed during the uninstall.
The steps provided both in the Symantec KB and the MSKB should remove the
Symantec driver reference from the registry.

Patti,

It worked, exactly as the link indicated. Your a lifesaver or at least you
were able to get my blood pressure back to normal.

Again, my sincerest thanks.
