A strange problem has happened to me and I am at a loss as to how to fix it.
I am a disabled vet and I am also an amatuer weather watcher. I use a
program called Storm Predator on my computer and have been for quite some time. I recently downloaded an update for it and tried to install it.
However, when I try I get the following error:
(Header of the message) 16 Bit MS-DOS Subsystem
"C:\Documents and Settings\....\Local Settings\Temp\ A temporary file
needed for the initialization could not be created or could not be written
to. Make sure the directory path exists, and that disk space is available."

The path does exist, and I have plenty of hard drive space available.

I went to the Microsoft Knowledge Base and tried replacing the Autoexec.nt; Command Com; and config.nt files as they suggested, but I still get the error.

I downloaded from Kellys Corner (I believe it was called) a file named "XP
Profiles.EXE"...still nothing.

I tried running chkdsk /r with no results....

I did a Windows XP Pro repair....

I use Trend Micro Internet Security Suite and it is always up to date. I
did run a full scan in safe mode....

I ran Spy Bot Search and Destroy in safe mode (with the definitions
updated)....

I ran Kasperskys on line scan for trojans....

Cleaned out all temp files and junk....

I also tried running Ad-Aware that "was" installed on my computer. However, when I went to run it, I noticed the executible was missing! (Very strange) I went to Lavasoft's web site and downloaded another copy of it, but guess what? I can't install it because of the 16 bit error I keep getting.

I spend a lot of time at my computer and could really use some help solving
this mystery.

Please, any suggestions would be more than welcome as I have tried just
about everything I know.

Thanks so much!

My Computer:
Windows XP Pro w/ SP2
I gig RAM
120 Gig HD (with approx 64 percent of that space available)

My first port of call would be the maker of the program.

Sounds simply to me you are trying to install an 'old' DOS program ... Win XP is suposed to be 32bit, not 16bit. ;)

However, after doing some research I see it is posssible that you may have a Trojan called "TrojanDownloader.Win32.Dia.a" ... look for a program in Add/Remove Programs called Winad Client and remove it ... then replace the .nt files as previous.

If you ain't got that Trojan, then I'm stomped. :(

Thanks for the quick reply. This thing has me crazy! It is not an old DOS program. It is not even a 16 bit program. I did muliple scans for virus' and trojans. Nothing.

There are other programs that give me the same error. I downloaded and tried to install Ad-Aware from the Lavasoft web site. I get the same error with that.

Went to the Microsoft Knowledge base web site and followed their recommendation of replacing the Autoexec.mt, the Config.nt and the Command.com. I did, but still have the same problem.

I ran chkdsk /r...didn't work...
I did a Windows Repair... didn't work.
I ran Spy Bot Search and Destroy w/ updated definitions in safe mode...didn't find anything...
I did Trend Micro Virus Scan with updated definitions in safe mode... didn't find anything...

I went to the WinXP newsgroup and followed their instructions, including searching my computer for the following:
Cmd.Com
Netstat.com
Ping.com
Regedit.Com
Taskkill.com
Tracert.com
Command.exe

I did not find any of the above on my computer.

As I said, I am completely baffled and hoping that I don't have to format and re-install windows.

Again, thanks for the reply. Any other suggestions would be most appreciated!

I'm afraid that sometimes we never do find the answer ... and have to re-install.

You have covered every angle as far as I can see ... sorry to say I have no answer for you. :(

I'd first wait for an answer to see if I was right before I crown myself...

I had the same problem after removing a few virus infections on an employee's workstation. I had to change my users and system environment variables for the temp folder. You will have to give the affected user account temporary local admin rights to make the changes. The Environment Variable settings are located in Control Panel - System - Advanced tab. I used the Edit button to change the variable value for TEMP from %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp to a folder I created c:\temp. I also had to edit the TEMP setting under the Systems Variables located at the bottom of this same window. Just click on the Edit button to change the variable value from %SystemRoot%\TEMP to c:\temp. Now you can remove the admin rights from the affected account and reboot for the changes to take effect. Good luck!
