16 bit application window self-closes with prompting

I'm running XP Home with serv pack 1 on an HP laptop.
I have installed a 16 bit Windows application (jds
technologies winevm that works fine with Win 2000 Prof).
when I open the application, it closes on its own in 20
seconds or less without any prompting. Any suggestions?
The manufacturer of the software hasn't heard of this
problem from other XP users.
