The popular CDGONE patch. CD drives may vanish in Windows Explorer,
Device Manager, etc. if a third-party CD-burning package has been
uninstalled and Registry references for some code modules aren’t
removed successfully. This patch and a reboot usually will restore the
missing drives. Any third
party package still required will then have to be re-installed.

If XP Pro check these settings in Group Policy. This does not work for
XP Home.
Open Group Policy...
Start | Run | Type: gpedit.msc | Click OK |
Navigate to >>

Hide these specified drives in My Computer
[[Removes the icons representing selected drives from My Computer and
Windows Explorer. Also, the drive letters representing the selected
drives do not appear in the standard Open dialog box.
This policy removes the drive icons. Users can still gain access to
drive contents by using other methods, such as by typing the path to a
directory on the drive in the Map Network Drive dialog box, in the Run
dialog box, or in a command window.]]

MS-MVP Windows Shell/User
In Big_AL12 <
[email protected]> hunted and pecked:
I just added an external DVD Writer to my Windows XP PRO system fully
updated by Microsoft patches. The drive works fine and is seen by all
applications including MS-DOS prompt, but Windows Explorer does not
show drive? It has constant drive letter L: and is the second 1394a
device I have. The first 1394a drive a hard drive shows in Windows
Explorer and I am able to move data from the hard drive to the DVD.
Any help greatly appreciated. --
