1394 PCI Card Driver

When I install the above card in XP it finds the '1394 Adapter' driver .

The driver works OK but I am unable to shut down my computer because it
hangs when closing down, going into standby or hibernation.

I found this link
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/nostandby.mspx but I did not expect a problem with MS drivers.

I do not have my original CD Rom for the card but I see it is also call PCI
OHCI IEEE 1394 Host Controller .Are there any reputable sites to download the
correct driver as the one I tried also tried to scan my computer!

Provide the chip brand name and other info on that chip. That's if you
cannot locate the driver by the info branded on the card itself.

1394 ports are also commonly referred to as "FireWire" ports. Extra
drivers should not be needed, though there are some updates.

There was a patch to fix some problems with XP SP1 and SP2 FireWire support,
but XP has never been great with FireWire. Maybe because Apple was heavily
involved, who knows?

There certainly were problems with MS's FireWire drivers; MS tried to fix
some of them by forcing the transfer speed down to a fraction of the limit
(in some cases to 12%), and had to re-patch since that was discovered to be
unacceptable.

In any case, the place to get the driver is Microsoft. Try this one.

Finally, the 1394 chip type/maker of the FireWire card is important - they
aren't all the same quality.

Thank you for your help.

I followed the link you provided and will download the update if you think
it will work. However the performance of the card has not decreased...its
only when I try to shut down my computer that the problem occurs. I am also a
little worried about altering the Registry!

I gave as much info about the card as I could find in my reply to the
previous post. If you still think I should download the update and alter the
registry I will.

BTW My version of XP if fully up to date with SP2 & SP3 and Updates
automatically turned on.
 
Unable to locate any pertinent data based on the information provided, which
you were supposed to check. Still waiting on the chip data.

Comment: Belkin doesn't list the package noted. Version 5 of VideoStudios
is relatively old. I bought version 7 three years ago, had version 5 with
numerous patches before that.

Firewire (1394A) revision 1.2 was released to support development of 1394B
for the open host controller... The 1394B standard was complete in 2002.

Though I've never had a shutdown problem with any firewire cards, I've had
best operability with those using the oxford chipset on the 1394B interface
cards. I would suspect the card is conflicting at the bios level for
hardware irq assignment if it operates okay within XP..

The card looks similar to some variants of F5U502 cards from Belkin.
It looks like a VIA Firewire chip on the card, of which there are a
number. (The pictures aren't really that clear, and this is just a
guess.)

In Device Manager, you might see drivers like 1394bus.sys and ohci1394.sys.
Searching on the driver names, brought this old KB article up.

I doubt it is the solution, but it is something to check. That tick box
probably disappeared long ago.

I have used the card on two different XP machines and have had the same
issues on both machines. Would you still think there is a BIOS conflict with
both machines?

In a quick search, I cannot find a standby problem with
FW323. About the only thing I can suggest, is having a look
in Event Viewer, to see if there are any errors showing.
The chip is probably using the same driver stack that
all the standards compliant chips are using, the
Microsoft driver.

I have checked the error log on both machines and there is nothing that
relates to this problem in either of them.

Somebody previously recommended using a MS patch - KB885222. I have just
tried to install it only to be advised it's already included in automatic
updates so was already on both machines.

It looks like I will have to put up with this problem. I am sure it does not
do my computer much good by disconnecting it from the mains when it hangs but
nothing else works!

Agere was bought out by LSI. Information from them is pay for at their
website.
The old agere.com website does list the FW323 and FW323-06 chip, but no
FW323-05 chip. But, the information chip links are dead, and forwards to
the current lsi.com website.

I had something here, that stopped my current machine from going into
standby. There was some javascript malware in an IE folder (at
least that is what the AV detected), called JS.Close,
and by deleting all the files left in some IE folders, it
stopped happening. There was one other thing detected, in
an application I seldom if ever use (Asus Update), and I
just uninstalled that, and after that I could go to standby
again. I think that was a false positive.

I believe KB885222 is for a computer that has a 1394b chip (800Mbit/sec).
The Agere chip is a 1394a (400Mbit/sec). So the patch would be fixing
something for which you have no applicable hardware.

It took me ages to find out it was the card that was causing the problem. I
tried System Restore, Msconfig,AV progs and then Device Manager. The card was
showing as '1394 Adapter' and showing as working corrrectly but when I tried
to do anything with it the computer just hung so I then knew that was
causing the problem.
To double check I put it into a second computer so I am 100% sure it's the
card and nothing else.

I am no expert but what I cannot understand is why a Microsoft Approved
Driver is causing this problem.

The driver used appears to be 5.1.2535.0 dated 1/7/2001.This driver is
included with XP but is independent to the card.Therefore I am assuming that
MS own the driver. I must be wrong.

I can understand why Agere/LSI would update the driver for my card and get
it approved by MS but driver 5.1.2535.0 dated 1/7/2001 seems to work so why
doesn't MS upgrade it?
