when hooking up my canon gl1 via firewire, the system no
longer recognizes it as a camera. only a "av/c subunit"
driver error. i have used this many times before without
any sort of problems until now. the system usually
recognizes the camera immediatley, without a hitch...ive
updated(though i know certain updates effect avid),
plugged it in both turned off and while hot, different
cables etc...

any suggestions?

Try system to restore to a point when the camera worked properly. and then
update again and check after each update to see if there are any problems,
as it sounds like something you have downloaded is interfering.

I would try removing the 1394 card and all drivers relating to it and start
over from scratch.
