Have scoured these pages looking for a solution. Have a notebook with
a firewire card running xp. Bought a firewire hd recently, and have
attached to notebook, but firewire does not detect. Have tried
disabling 1394 net adapter, and have also tried disabling all other
devices on same irq (9), but to no avail.HD has been tested on other
macs and pcs, and is fine. Have sent notebook back to manufacturer to
test firewire as well. They are able to send files from my notebook
to another and vice versa, so it clearly works as well, just not
together.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Does the firewire port support 4 or 6 wires? Four wires
will send data but not power a drive? Do you have a power
adapter for the drive?

Hi, Si!
I had the same kind of trouble with a firewire external HD.
I had to take it out of its external casing, mount it internally inside
a XP Desktop PC as slave drive, format it from XP, then replace it
inside its external casing as master drive.
Worked for me.

Have you tried going into the disk management tool (right click on My
Computer, click on Manage, and then click on Disk Management) and seeing if
Windows sees it using this tool. If the disk management tool sees the disk,
you might just need to right click on the disk and Initialize it.

It is 4 pin, but has external power plugged in. I cannot see it in
disk management tool, and it is not possible to add it as a slave
drive unfortunately. You think if i were to format the disk, the
notebook might be able to see it??

I am wondering about a BIOS setting. It would seem that
even an unformatted disk should be seen.

Have you tried a different Firewire cable, in case the one
you have is defective?

Did you get an answer to your problem. I'm experiencing
the same type of problem?
Please respond.

didn't get an answer unfortunately, ended up buying a pcmcia card -
which is not the ideal solution, but it seems to resolve the problem.
If you ever find a better solution, please let me know.
