Hi all!
I have a computer from 2001 with a cheap AMD compatible motherboard
and an AMD 1400 MHz processor. The memory type I have is 256 MB at
133MHz.

My question is: I want to expand my memory - do I have to buy the
older more expensive 133 MHz type or can I buy some modern kind that
is cheaper?

Thanks!

You need the older PC133 SDRAM stuff. The newer DDR stuff won't even fit
in the same memory slots (fortunately).
