1280x960 resolution?

I'm currently using 1280x1024 and I hate it. For my eyes it's slightly to
small for a 17" CRT and the fact that it's not in 4:3 ratio probably doesn't
help.

But 1280x960 IS in 4:3 and it's just right for me.

At least it was on my old GF2. On my 8500 it just isn't an option for some
reason.

How do I get it without resorting to 3rd party drivers/software?

Been using that res for ages myself, and works fine on my 9800 with
Cat3.2
 
With the 8500, you'll need to run Rage3D tweak in order to enable 1280x960.

There's a registry hack, but I never bother with it and just run the Rage3d
whenever I switch drivers.

I have never understood why ATI refuses to enable that res in their
drivers...
