128-bit 9800 Pro from Overclockers.co.uk?

I have emailed OC and Connect3D this morning but have not had a reply -
so...

I just got a Connect3D 9800 Pro from www.overclockers.co.uk I had heard of
the Sapphire 9800 Pro fiasco regarding the 128-bit memory bandwidth cards
sold as 256-bit and so was aware of the possibility. Overclockers made no
mention of anything but a full 256-bit 9800 Pro card. However, when the card
arrived this morning, I noticed a white sticker on the back of the box
saying 'Radeon 9800 Pro with 128MB 128bit DDR DRAM'. Surely that should read
'128MB *256-bit* DDR DRAM' to be a 256-bit 9800 Pro? The box blurb states a
256-bit memory interface.

Does a 256bit memory interface require 256-bit DDR DRAM or does the 128-bit
DDR mean 256-bit (i.e. double)?

Under display/gpu it will show you the bus width which should be 128bit.

HY5DU283222A. Looking on the Hynix site indicates that this is 128-bit
memory and not 256-bit. So even if the memory interface is 256-bit the
memory is not. Somebody surely must know something about the relationship
between memory bit-depth and memory bit-capacity....
 
Well, they don't make any memory that is literally 128-bits wide AFAIK (for one
thing that would require more than 128 pins/leads). That's why there's 4 Hynix
memory chips, I'm guessing each one outputs 64-bits (at least on my 9800 Pro
256-bit, 256MB). Maybe they've got 64-bit and 32-bit memory parts? Do they
still interleave memory access on video cards anymore?

Definitive answer.....use AIDA32 or download Everest (which is same thing)
and check under GPU properties. If it says 128bit....that's what it is.

Damn, I never noticed that. I bought the exact same one 2 weeks ago and
it says the same. Rivatuner says 256-bit so I never thought it being one
of the crippled ones, but it might just get information from
predetermined things, i.e R350 = 256bit. I'm downloading the EVEREST
thing now, I'll say when it's done :-/

Please post the reply here if you get one, I'm now annoyed and intrigued.

Hmmm, that also says my mem bus width is 256 bit. So, anyone.. Is it or
isn't it? Is this program 100% accurate?
 
Like you I suspect the info from these programs since they could assume
256-bit - for instance, I am told that you can only tell an R350 from an
R360 GPU by removing the heatsink; yet Everest says it is an R350 GPU.
However, if you use Everest after overclocking the card a little with say
ATiTools, the figures do change - so it is gathering its own information to
some extent. Looking at these speed figures against other users' figures, it
does seem to be a 256-bit card. The company Connect3D replied to my email
saying that some of the boxes were mislabelled.
 
A good way to tell if the card is 128-bit or 256-bit is by the arrangement
of the RAM chips:

If the chips are in a single line above the processor, it's 128-bit.
If the chips are around the processor in an "L" shape, it's 256-bit.

If the chips are *not* BGA, it's 128-bit.
 
here is a way to find out . Download 3dmark 2001 on futuremak site. Do the
single fillrate and Multitexture Fillrate
Should be 1400 for single or higher Multitexture 2400 and higher . If u get
that you have 256bit . If u get half that score have a 128bit.
