I have a windows XP professional installation. Suddenly this
afternoon, this error always appears when trying to access web pages,
SMTP, POP3, in fact when trying to open a socket.

Ping works fine. I have found several other posts on google regarding
this but no definative answers.

The ONLY change I have made to the system is install NETBEUI.
Networking broke about 1 hour after this. I have removed it again,
but it is still broken.

I have tried -
Disabling the DNS client
run winmsd & looked at the names. Everything had either MSAFD or
RSVP.
run LSPfix - it found a few errors, but still nothing works.
Searching MS knowledge base - no mention is made of the error.

Clues - I cannot ping by name, only by number, and the name is a
garbage text string. So I am inclined to belive there is something
wrong with DNS, but maybe this is a symtom.
Samba works.

System restore is turned off, so no luck there (virus removal
precaution)

I am at the "lets wipe and restore stage".

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

hi,
you can try this
1. boot into safe mode, delete these keys from registry
and restart computer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winso
ck
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winso
ck2

2. reinstall TCP/IP over the top (following are the
correct steps to do it)
a. control panel->network connections->right click
on "LAN or high speed internet connection" and open
properties
b. click install -> choose "protocol" and click add -
then click "Have Disk" -> in the "copy manufacturer's
files from" box type "c:\windows\inf" and then click "ok"
on the rest of the boxes and close them all.
c. restart the computer

3. check your internet connection, it should work fine.

Backup the winsock keys before you delete them. I've never had any luck
with this technique.

We know what causes it. I can name any number of software programs that
corrupt the Winsock catalog. The tougher part is how to prevent it.

Ah, Thanks.
