1000 to 2003 problems (DC)

1. Two computers - one Outlook 2000 other 2003
2. Moved pst files to the 2003. Reconnected the Contacts folder as instructed by Russ here
3. Talked with Woody Leonhard and he suggessted moving the email in 2000 to 2003 instead of the pst files - more efficient. (It is!!!!
4. Renamed pst file and caused 2003 to recreate a 2003 pst file
5. Opened both in 2003 and moved folders and email to 2003 pst file (took 1 1/2 hours for about 1GB file)
6. Now I have lost my Contacts file - can not find it anyplace
Have no Contact folder in 2003 and when I look at Personal Folder pate there is Contacts on the right hand side but nothing in that file. When I try to connect as per instructions - everything is blank

I still have my Outlook 2000 addresses on the original computer. How do I transfer those over to the 2003 computer (networked together) and connect them. I really have three address books that I would like to transfer - they are
1. Address Book - email where all addresses of replies g
2. Address Book - personal for family and friend
3. Contacts What I really need!!!

How do I get all three to the 2003 computer and used in Outlook.

It is impossible to discern exactly what you did or how you lost your
Contacts from your post. Could you please clarify?

You should be able to create Folders in your new Outlook 2003 PST that match
the ones in your Outlook 2000 PST. Open your Outlook 2000 PST in Outlook
2003 and simply copy and paste what you want from the Outlook 2000 PST to
the Outlook 2003 PST. Lastly, just enable all Contacts Folders in Outlook
2003 as email address books so they will all appear in your Outlook Address
Book.

Here is the process that I went through.

1. I installed Outlook 2003 on a new computer and needed to transfer my email, address books, etc from the old computer running Outlook 2000.
2. I copied the complete outlook.pst from the 2000 machine to the 2003 computer and installed it in the correct subdirectory.
3. Opened the 2003 using the old 2000 file and everything worked – except no address book.
4. followed your directions to connect the Contacts to the Address Book and it worked fine.

Everything worked OK at this point!!
BUT.

5. After talking to Woody Leonhard of Woody’s Office Power Pack (WOPR) and writer of books on MS Office he said that my slowness of the new Outlook was due to using the old outlook.pst file. That the new file system was more efficient . I followed his directions as follows.
6. Renamed outlook.pst file to outlook1.pst (this was the file after the transfer from Outlook 2000. Opened Outlook 2003 and let it created a new pst file.
7. I then opened the outlook1.pst file and copied all of the folders and email from outlook1.pst to the newly created outlook.pst file. This was easy but time consuming. It did work much more efficiently. There was no “Contacts†folder shown to transfer.
8. I discovered that I had lost all my rules – so I did them again (cleaned things out!!!).
9. I discovered I lost my Contacts folder. I searched high and low for it, tried to make a connect with the Contacts file and the Address Book as per your instructions – but nothing in Contacts. I can not find any file with the Contacts in them in the new computer.
10. I still have three Address Books/Contacts in the old computer with Outlook 2000 and need to transfer these over to the new computer and Outlook 2003 (they are networked together).

Hopefully this will help you understand where I am and can tell me what I need to do to make the transfer. Thanks for all you do on this list.

Since I have been receiving email in the new computer and Outlook 2003, I cannot go through the process again without losing email – which for many reasons I can not do.

You received bad advice. Using an old format PST in Outlook 2003 will not
slow anything down.
Overwriting a PST the way you did can corrupt it or its settings (that's why
you had to reconnect your Outlook Address Book).
Then renaming that PST instead of disconnecting it from your Outlook profile
correctly will even more likely corrupt it.

What you should have done and can still do is simply configure Outlook to
use your old PST in the correct way: Create a new Outlook Profile from
scratch and set it to use your old PST as its information store.

I would beg to differ with you as when I did transfer the folders and files over to Outook 2003 there was an appreciable pickup in speed. when you consider my ost file is 1GB it was readily noticeable. There is little doubt in my mind that I did the right thing along that line

As far as the lost Contacts - I guess I hae to live with it - granted I may have caused it but there appears to be no way to transfer Contacts only from Outlook 2000 ot Outlook 2003 from what you say. I cannot go back and use the old outlook.pst file as I would loose a number of emails that I cannot lose for various reasons

Thanks for your time and help even though apparently the problem is insolvable with the limitations I have. I will just recreate the address book.

I agree. With a PST over 1G you might notice an increase in speed. That's an
unusual circumstance for most standalone users.

The bad advice was on the method Woody gave you. Simply renaming the default
PST is not supported. To switch default stores, open or create your new
store within Outlook, configure the new PST to be the default, then close
the old. To transfer information from an older format PST, simply open it in
Outlook 2003 and use the Copy to Folder... command to transfer data. It
seems to me you can still do that.
