For Sure

Yes it's extreme, but is the only "true" fix formatting
the drive and re-installing Windows? (At least until
MSAS is no longer beta)

To combat it in the future and to ease the burden if a
format and re-install is necessary:
- Have a second drive installed and store all (most) data
there.
- Run a system backup and save it there (system restore
only holds 3 months worth of checkpoints).
- Schedule regular backups of system settings and data
files.
- Don't be click happy on pop up's and dialogue boxes -
read them before you click "yes" or "no" to close.

No, most users can't and won't do this. But it keeps me
busy fixing their PC's.

Thoughts please.

on a new system, install the bare OS, tweak it without installing any
applications. Update it with all service packs and run it for 48 hours,
ensuring no problems are encountered. Image the install and named it
cleaninstall. Install other MS's applcations that you use with updates,
image it and named it cleaninstallwithMS. (don't forget to create a log)
Install security applications that you use, firewall, antivirus, etc and
image, named as cleaninstallMSsecurity.
Must remember to install a backup application for data files.

OK you are done, start installing everything that you want, p2p, warez,
spyware, blah blah blah, but don't image.
if anything goes wrong, use image cleaninstallMSsecurity to restore system
to this status and start anew.

and soon you will out of a job ;-)

LOL......cool!

Hi For,

That would be truly on the extreme end of the spectrum. While this junk
certainly takes a tad longer to clean that a good old fashioned virus, most
machines can be saved.
If users did backups, ran firewall, a current up to date AV program, and
used Windows Update, we would all be playing Solitaire rather than posting
in here.
If they went to http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/default.mspx for
best practices, and followed them, I would rest easy.

actually there is a flaw
when MS issues SPs or updates, you got to go back to the clean install,
install the SPs and updates, image it , and then start installing the
junkware again :-)
