xp pro. task manager shows 100% cpu usage & the hd light is constanly on. i was having problem
w/bootup. removed some recently installed programs. it boots now but the light remains on. i thin
there is a process hitting the drive. how can i find it & stop it?

I suggest you update your virus definitions and run a full anti-virus scan. Also you download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove parasites.

Look at processes in Task Manager. It is normal to have a number of Svchost.exe process entries appearing in Task Manager. For the process generating the high usage how is the User described? Next whilst Task Manager is showing high usage change from the Process Tab to the Application Tab. Then select each running Application in turn, right click and select "Go to Process" and see if you can identify the application causing the high usage.

Next select Start, Administrative Tools, Services. Compare the list of services with those shown as Started and for each in turn stop the service and observe the effect. If the CPU usage in Task Manager continues or something stops working restart the service. When you have found the likely cause i.e. the CPU usage stops then post details of what you have found.

Hope this helps.

I have this problem and did all suggested fixes. The "system" was using the
CPU and seemed to happen most often (though not always) when the Dell Alert
connection had been made. Nothing releases the system short of shutting
down completely, not just a restart. I have nothing in my startup and tried
eliminating all services one by one. I am unable to disable the auto Dell
Alert system which I suspect is causing the problem. However, since it
isn't 100% consistent, I can't verify that conclusion. I had no problems
until upgrading my Microsoft Office Small Business Edition. Uninstalling
that application had no effect on the CPU usage. Currently I just shut down
and restart until the CPU is released and operating normally. Someone
posted a patch on this problem but I cannot access the Microsoft help
webpages for some reason so can't download it. I suspect this is a more
common problem than is reported here.

(In case someone wants to email the patch....)

What version of Office? What is your position regarding Find Fast?

Have you looked in Control Panel for Add/ Remove Programs for the auto Dell Alert system?

It's Office Small Business Edition 2003. I did look in control panel for
Dell Alert but didn't find any uninstall information. Under the menu
options it has several selections on how many times per day to connect to
Dell but once is the least. You can't just "not" connect. I can go the
entire day just fine and as soon as the icon for the Dell Alert comes up, my
CPU goes to 100% and that's it until I shut down. It took 3 reboots to get
it back to normal today. But it only happens about 90% of the time. About
once a week the icon will come up and the system doesn't hang so maybe it
something entirely different.

I've tried uninstalling Office as well but it still hangs. That was just the
defining start point of when I began having problems with it. I have to
have my Office software to work. I'm working around it now but would like
to figure out the "why"!

Thanks,
Fran
