Hi! I run a Sony Vaio with 2.53Ghz Pentium 4, 512 MB of
RAM, Win Xp Home, and IE6SP2. Erratically, I get 1000%
CPU usage with seemingly no cause. Its not spyware, and
my hard drive is less than 10% full. Help please!

I have been having the same problems for the past 2 days,
also. It takes about 10 - 15 reboots before it
will 'take' and finally boot.

I tried to do the old version of scan disk, which is now
chkdsk, and there are no broken chains showing.

I have a 20 gig hard drive that is less that 10% full
also.

When I saw something like this on a Win 95 machine, there
were swap file settings that could be altered to allow
for more file size, but I can't even begin to figure out
what that might have mutated into, with XP.

Any suggestions? I have the most current DAT files from
McAfee, have run those scans, as well as up to date
patches from Microsoft for VP.

Thanks,

Barbara

First thing to do is look to see what process is using all of the CPU. Once
you have the name, you can see if it's something you want running, or
whether it's a virus, or just some program running rampant.

Without knowing what it is, it's hard to offer any other help.

Any suggestions on how to do that when the thing freezes
up? The only thing I get is a frozen machine, which I then
wait out - and since it doesn't clear, then I reboot,
which is when I got the 100% utilized message.

Thanks,

Barbara

What does the "100% utilized" message say? Exactly. Is this a Windows error
message, or from some program, or what?

You can boot from a win 98 floppy, but if you're using NTFS, a boot floppy
isn't going to get you anywhere. The WinXP CD is bootable, and you can do a
repair install from there.

As far as reading the blue screen, once you get running, go to system
properties, advanced, startup and recovery, and untick the box that says
"automatically restart."

If that works,
