Scott again

This is a brand new dell dimension 8200 \XP home\ 512
sdram. I have nothing in the start up. why would the CPU
be 100 % all the time? Is this a hardware issue?? There is
nothing running in the back ground that is out of the norm
for XP.

Scott,

If nothing running in the background is out of the normal, what exactly out
of the list of processes in task manager is using the cpu ?

Remember that "System Idle Process" measures your SPARE cpu, that is, cpu
not being used.

The figures I saw in the post above such as 20K for system, appear to be
memory figures, not percentage cpu usage.

There should be 4 columns: Image Name, User Name, CPU, and
Mem Usage. The number under CPU is the CPU usage, it is
the 3rd column from the left. Find the highest number and
look for the process name to the left of that. If system
idle process is high then that's good because it is
reporting the amount of CPU time not being used.
