Hi folks,

Just wondered if any-one knew why there was a long delay before a ping
started when pinging by netbios name? If I ping by IP address it starts
immediately. I have the netbios name in LMHOSTS so I don't see why there is
this 10 second delay before it starts. Once it starts it is fine and I get
the expected replies at the expected speed.

TIA,

Derek

Have you tried putting the name and address into the HOSTS file?

Steve,

Interesting reading, thanks. Oh and it worked , thanks again.

So Hosts is much higher up the search order than LMhosts. It kind of leads
me back to a question I have never really got a good answer for. Why are
hosts AND lmhosts needed if you can just put your entries into Hosts?

TIA,

Derek

The 10 sec. delay is due to a time delay in DNS resolution. By putting in in the hosts file
you get immediate name to IP address resolution.

The LMhosts tables is specific to MS Networking and NetBIOS names.

Glad to have helped, thanks for the feedback.

The HOSTS file is a TCP/IP standard, LMHosts is a Microsoft Lan Manager
specific file.
