Hi,

I was wondering when I buy a 10/100Mbps NIC, which speed
it will use in my network. It will be connected to a
10/100Mbps router with a UTP(RJ45) cable. Does it depend
on the type of cable I use? Or do I have to configure it
someway to use 100Mbps? Maybe it will even do it
automatically?

Thanks,
Martin

The NIC should automatically sense that the router is capable of
100Mbps and use that speed. You can control the network card speed as
shown here:

However, DSL and cable modems have top speeds of much less than 10
Mbps, so your Internet download speeds will be the same whether the
NIC connects to the router at 10 or 100.

Hi, Martin -

In almost all cases your NIC will default to 100Mbps -
all you need is to make sure the UTP cable is Category 5
or faster - most of the stuff you buy at the computer
store is - I don't believe I've seen slower cable
available (except in bulk) in quite awhile.
